While your child is at school you will be updated on their progress through written reports and parent-teacher meetings.

Teacher Meetings

Parent-teacher meetings are an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher(s). You can discuss the information provided in the school report, and become more involved in your child’s learning. Teachers are also happy to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress at any time during the year. An appointment is preferable for discussions that may be more involved.

Reports

School Reports

Reports provided by your school will give you achievement information on key curriculum areas. It will also provide information on how your child:

  • has progressed from the previous year
  • has performed against statewide standards

Written comments on the report will give information on how your child is going overall and identify any difficulties or areas on which to focus.

You may request information from the school about how your child's results compare with those of other students in the same year group around the state. For more information on reading and interpreting reports please ask your child’s teacher or principal.

Kindergarten Developmental Check (KDC)

When your child is in Kindergarten, their teacher will use the Kindergarten Development Check to assess their:

  • thinking and problem-solving skills
  • listening, speaking and understanding skills
  • gross motor skills
  • fine motor skills
  • personal and social skills.

The check helps the teacher to monitor and observe your child’s development and to ensure that progress is occurring in an appropriate way for their age. For more information contact your school.

Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS)

When your child is in Prep, teachers will conduct a more formal assessment called Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS). This program identifies children who are not achieving expected standards of literacy and numeracy in the early childhood years. PIPS helps teachers to plan appropriate programs for identified children and to report to parents on their child’s strengths and areas of concern. PIPS also measures whether particular support or intervention has been effective.

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 Literacy and Numeracy Monitoring Program

Each year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit tests designed to assess their literacy and numeracy skills under the National Assessment Program.

If your child is in one of these year groups you will receive an individual report showing your child's achievement against the National Minimum Standard and their performance compared with all other students across Australia in that year level.
