Your entitlements as an international student are mainly governed by laws of the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Tasmania and by the policies of the Department of Education.
In summary, these entitlements mean that you will:
- generally have access, based on need, to all Department of Education education and welfare services that are available to local students in schools, school clusters and Learning Services;
- a key teacher in your school who will be your contact and support;
- a Student Contact Officer in International Services Office to coordinate all your services;
- be provided with clear information about your course, the costs of your course, the conditions that apply, information about refunds and dealing with complaints;
- be provided with a homestay placement and support service if you are under 18;
- be given assistance and advice when choosing subjects and pathways to further study beyond school;
- have English language support and assistance that aims to get you into mainstream classes and programs as soon as you are able;
- be provided with an induction program to introduce you to your Tasmanian school and education system; and
- be able to enrol in your local school if you are a primary school student.
Your responsibilities are mainly governed by the conditions that apply to your Student Visa, the Conditions of Placement included in your Letter of Offer and by the policies of the Department of Education.
In summary these responsibilities mean that you will:
- maintain a good attendance record at school;
- maintain satisfactory progress with your studies at school;
- ensure that International Services Office is always informed of where you live;
- not work unless you have been given permission to work by Immigration;
- remain with your Department of Education enrolment for at least 12 months;
- ensure that all tuition and homestay fees are paid by the dates required;
- remain in accommodation arranged by or approved by the Homestay Coordinator;
- respect and follow the rules and conventions of your Homestay Host;
- not drive a motor vehicle unless you have the appropriate Tasmanian or International Licence;
- maintain required Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of your stay;
You will be helped and supported in ensuring that you have access to all your entitlements and to assist you in meeting your responsibilities. The key people to help you are your key teacher in school, your Homestay Host, the Homestay Coordinator and the Student Contact Officer.
If you plan to travel during the school year, you need to complete a leave advice form [Word 48KB] with your teachers and your homestay host and return the completed form to International Services Office. If you are under 18, you need to obtain permission from your parents for all travel.
