Preparation before you leave

If you are coming to a Tasmanian government school on a Student Visa there are a number of things that you can do before you leave that will make your arrival and your time in Tasmania much happier.

A few weeks or more before leaving home you should

  • Complete your Student Profile and fax or mail it to International Services Office.
  • Use the login included with your Confirmation of Enrolment to access the Broadlearn™ Welcome to Tasmania Program to learn more about your school and homestay in Tasmania.
  • Book your flights to Australia and connections to the Tasmanian city where your school is located. Please note that it is likely that you will have to wait a long time at Sydney or Melbourne airport for your connection to Tasmania. You may wish to arrange to stay with relatives there, or in an airport hotel while waiting.
  • Confirm the role that your agent will take in communications with International Services Office, your school and your Homestay Host. Please ensure that you inform International Services Office what role your agent will take in communications with your family.

Two weeks before leaving home

  • A homestay will be selected for you by your Homestay Coordinator that meets your requirements based on your Student Profile.
  • A Homestay Host Profile will be sent to you.
  • Email or fax your flight details to the International Services Office so that arrangements can be made for you to be picked up at the airport in Tasmania.
  • Check the details on the Enrolment Advice Form that International Services Office sends you. This form includes all your key contacts including your parents, your agent (if you have one), your school and your Homestay Host in Tasmania. Please inform our office if there are any errors in the details on this form.
  • Consider making contact with your Tasmanian school to introduce yourself.
  • When you arrive in Tasmania your school will help you to open a bank account. It would be useful if you could arrange with your parents before leaving home how they will transfer money into your account. Please do not bring large amounts of cash into Australia as it is dangerous and Australian Customs requires that amounts of AUD$10,000 or more, or equivalent in foreign currency (meaning notes and coins of legal tender), must be reported on arrival or departure.

A few days before leaving home you should

  • Confirm your flights and arrival details and email or fax these to International Services Office if you have not already done so or if the flight details have changed.
  • When packing your clothes take note of the Tasmanian Climate.
