Teaching in Tasmania

A Quick Guide to obtaining a Teaching Position with the Department of Education

Teacher Registration

(August 2005)

All teachers intending to work in Tasmanian schools must be registered with the Teachers Registration Board. Mutual recognition may apply for teachers who are currently registered in other States or Territories. The Teachers Registration Board is an independent statutory authority separate from any educational authority.

The Teachers Registration Board can be contacted through their website or by e-mail at TRB.admin@education.tas.gov.au.

The Board office is located at Level 4, Kirksway House, 2 Kirksway Place, Battery Point, Hobart and can be contacted on (03) 6233 5992 or fax (03) 6233 2549.

Good Character Check

(July 2005)

While registration with the Teachers Registration Board is essential it is not the only requirement. All teachers intending to work for the Department of Education must first satisfy a departmental Good Character Check.

This is in addition to any checks undertaken by the Teachers Registration Board.

A satisfactory departmental Good Character Check must be obtained prior to appointment to any position within DoE schools and this good character clearance may take more than a week to process. The Good Character Check application form [Word 297KB] can be obtained online.

The Department has produced a pamphlet, 'Good Character Checks for Pre-Service & Graduate Teachers' [Word 397KB] to clarify its employment and good character check requirements for this group of teachers.

Types of Employment:

Permanent Appointments

(May 2005)

Permanent teaching positions have Statements of Duties and are generally won through a merit selection process.

In addition to its normal teacher recruitment processes, each year the Department offers quality teaching graduates from the University of Tasmania the opportunity to gain permanent employment as a teacher in the Tasmanian public education system through the Graduate Recruitment Program (Teachers).

Fixed-term Teacher Appointments

(May 2005)

Temporary teaching vacancies of over twenty working days duration are known as fixed-term teaching vacancies. Fixed-term vacancies are filled by merit selection via an online teaching register called E-Pool. E-Pool is a database from which schools, Learning Services and other authorised departmental staff can obtain the names and details of teachers who are eligible for and interested in fixed-term employment positions.

Teachers wishing to be considered for fixed-term vacancies must be registered on E-Pool and have “active” status to be eligible for appointment to teaching positions within the Department.

There are three criteria that must be satisfied for an E-Pool application to be activated:

  1. A Teachers Registration Board number must be submitted in the application to indicate that teacher registration has been granted by the Teachers Registration Board (Tasmania);
  2. A copy of the applicant’s completed teaching qualifications must be submitted to the department to determine correct payment of salary; and
  3. A departmental Good Character Check must have been satisfied.

Registration can be made online at the E-Pool site or a hard copy application can be obtained via e-mail to recruitment@education.tas.gov.au.

Please read Ministerial Direction No. 15 [PDF 133KB] regarding assignments and conditions for Permanent Replacement Teachers.

Relief Teacher Appointments

(May 2005)

Relief teaching positions of a short term nature (up to 20 continuous days) are filled on a day to day basis using Manpower, a relief teacher provider.

Teachers interested in undertaking relief teaching must fill in the appropriate box when registering on E-Pool or apply online to obtain a relief teaching information and application package [PDF 408KB].

For further information please contact Manpower by telephone on (03) 6214 0270 or fax (03) 6233 2900 or e-mail hobart@manpower.com.au.
