Welcome back to school staff and students for 2021
2 February 2021
Here we go for Term 1, 2021! We wish all our school staff and students (about 62,000 of you!) a very warm welcome and we hope this week marks the beginning of a year full of learning and growth.
There’s so much to look forward to during Term 1 and beyond.
Whether students are just starting out in Kindergarten or entering Year 12, the start of a school year can bring a lot of different emotions, from excitement about seeing new and old friends or beginning new subjects to apprehension at meeting new teachers or starting at a new school.
With the 2021 school year upon us (hopefully a year with less disruptions) we checked in with Ivy (Year 1), Sam (Year 7) and Owen (Year 12 – not pictured) who are at different stages of their learning journey. We talked about how they were feeling in the lead up to school and what they were looking forward to in 2021.
Ivy – Year 1
Sam – Year 7
What was 2020 like for you at school?
Ivy: It was ok because it was a bit of a different year with coronavirus. In 2019 we were at school all year but when it came along we had to do home school for a while in 2020.
Sam: It was challenging but I’m glad we were able to have an excursion and our end of year dinner at the end.
Owen: 2020 was a disrupted school year but considering we were in a pandemic it wasn’t too bad.
What are your favourite subjects?
Ivy: My favourite subjects are music, spelling and outdoor classroom.
Sam: My favourite subjects are English, Maths and PE.
Owen: My favourite subjects are outdoor education and cooking.
How are you feeling with school going back?
Ivy: I’m feeling a bit nervous but also happy that I’m going back to school so that I can learn new things.
Sam: I am feeling good, and excited to be starting high school.
Owen: I have been really enjoying my school holidays, but I’m also excited to see all my friends and have a better year than last year.
What are you looking forward to the most in 2021?
Ivy: I’m looking forward to meeting my new teachers, seeing my friends and learning about things that happened a long time.
Sam: All the new subjects you can do at high school, like woodwork and cooking.
Owen: I’m looking forward to turning 18 this year, and I’m also looking forward to getting an apprenticeship.
What are you hoping to achieve this year?
Ivy: I want to learn to write longer words this year.
Sam: To make the most of all the new opportunities and make new friends.
Owen: I hope to get an apprenticeship at some point this year as a motorcycle mechanic. If not, then I hope to pass all my classes and have a good year.
