ONLINE SAFETY IN TASMANIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

Did you know?

Making sure your child is safe online is a shared responsibility between the community, parents, schools and students.

Where to start

  • The Department of Education believes children should learn in a safe, supportive and respectful school community. This includes participating safely in technology-based learning and using technology responsibly.
  • Using digital technology responsibly is everyone’s business – this includes the user, the provider, the parent, the school and the community.

For your child

  • Schools work within the National Safe Schools Framework that provides all schools, teachers, parents and students with resources to develop student safety and wellbeing policies, including cyber-safety.
  • Students learn how to be responsible users of technology. Your school has guidelines around the acceptable use of technology that students must agree to.
  • The department filters internet use to protect schools from known risks.

For you

  • Talk to your child about what they are doing and seeing online.
  • Talk to your child about the dangers of giving personal details online.
  • Educate your child about the dangers of online activities.
  • Encourage your child to talk to you about any problems.
  • Use a filtering system at home to make sure your child can’t access dangerous things online.
  • Your child will be expected to use technology responsibly at school and encouraged to do this outside of school as well.
