All adults (18 and over on the first day of Term 1) applying to enrol must complete a Good Character Check Application Form and receive a formal clearance prior to commencement of study in any State school or college.
The good character check requirement does not apply to open learning and distance education adult student enrolments that do not require attendance at classes on school or college premises.
Until a Good Character Check has been completed and a clearance letter is sighted by the school or college, an individual's enrolment application will be deemed "not complete".
The adult student cannot attend classes on the school or college premises until confirmation of the good character check clearance has been noted within the student computer system.
If an adult refuses to complete the Good Character Check Application Form, then the enrolment must be declined, and the adult will not be allowed to attend any classes on the school or college premises.
Good character checks currently can take up to four weeks to be processed, so prompt completion of the Good Character Check Application Form is essential.
If an applicant for a good character check is still awaiting clearance at the commencement of classes then alternative arrangements must be made until a clearance is received, for example class work provided to the individual to study at home.
How Good Character Checks are processed
A completed Good Character Check Application Form is to be sent directly to the Department's Investigation Unit for processing. If the school or college receives a completed Good Character Check Application Form it must be sent directly to the Conduct and Investigations Unit in a sealed envelop marked "Strictly Confidential".
The Conduct & Investigations Unit undertakes all good character assessments and notifies each applicant of the outcome of their assessment in writing. It is the Principal's responsibility to ensure that all adult enrolments have received a good character clearance prior to attending classes on the school or college premises.
