National Disability Insurance Scheme – Roll out in Tasmanian Government Schools

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing individualised support for people with disability and will replace the current Tasmanian disability support system.

The aim of the new scheme is to provide people with choice and control over how, when and where their disability supports are provided, and provides certainty that they will receive the support they need over their lifetime.

Tasmanian Government departments and agencies will continue to make their services accessible and inclusive of people with disability.

The National Disability Insurance Agency

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the independent agency that delivers the NDIS. The NDIA is responsible for assessing the eligibility of participants and working with them to develop support plans that meet their needs. The NDIA will also support the delivery of broader disability supports in the community.

The NDIS was rolled out across Tasmania between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2019.

Since June 2019, approximately 10,600 Tasmanians have been supported through the NDIS.

The Department of Education developed a Transition Plan to support the smooth transition to the NDIS, and information packs have been provided to schools and Early Childhood Intervention Services to help build understanding of the NDIS.

Meeting the educational needs of students with disability

Education providers in Tasmania will continue to meet the personalised learning and support needs of students with disability under the Disability Standards for Education 2015.

Students who are ineligible for the NDIS will still receive this support in their schools.

Under the Standards, education providers make reasonable adjustments for students with disability to access education on the same basis as other students. Education providers work closely with parents and carers in providing adjustments and supporting students with disability.
