Tasmanian Kindergartens are children’s formal enrolment point into their local school and provide play-based learning for children who are 4 years of age on or before January 1st of the year they start Kindergarten (Admission Guidelines below).

Kindergartens have a teacher and teacher assistant who work with the children.

Kindergarten provides opportunities for children to

  • learn from other children
  • learn from adults
  • learn personal independence
  • develop confidence
  • gain social skills.

Kindergarten teachers use the Early Years Learning Framework to plan and provide quality teaching and learning experiences to meet the needs of all children. Schools acknowledge families as the children’s first and most influential teacher and encourage parents to work in partnership with them. A range of strategies are used to keep parents informed about their child’s progress during Kindergarten.
