National Disability Insurance Scheme

Our Commitment

The Department of Education is committed to working collaboratively with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and State Government agencies to support the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eligible people in Tasmania.

NDIS in Tasmania

The NDIS has been rolled out in Tasmania in age groups. By July 2019 the NDIS will be available for all eligible Tasmanians.

The Local Area Coordination of NDIS services in Tasmania has been contracted to Mission Australia and Baptcare, two community based organisations.

Further information is available at the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Supporting Students in Government Schools

The Department of Education continues to have the responsibility to provide an educational program for all children which is differentiated to cater for their learning needs, their emotional requirements and their physical environment.

Our staff are aware of their requirements under the Disability Standards in Education 2005 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, and will continue to provide educational adjustments to ensure all students can access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.

Support Teachers and Professional Support Staff compliment and inform the work of teachers and Principals in Tasmanian Government schools.

Further information is available at NDIS – Tasmanian Schools and NDIS – Tasmanian Students.

School Leavers Employment Supports

The School Leavers Employment Supports (SLES) are individually tailored for each participant to identify goals and supports required to either enter employment or further training opportunities. This is available for students who are completing year 12, over the school leaving age and is a transition support.

The NDIS has created a teacher toolkit to assist students and their families consider post year 12 options and the SLES intersection.

Further information is available at:

Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI)

The Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) approach supports children aged 0-6 years who have a developmental delay or disability and their families/carers. The ECEI approach supports families to help children develop the skills they need to take part in daily activities and achieve the best possible outcomes throughout their life.

In Tasmania, the Department’s Early Childhood Intervention Service (ECIS) has been working in partnership with ECEI to ensure that families have appropriate referral pathways to NDIS supports.

Further information is available at ECEI.

Student Equipment Needs in School

Children with disability may require specific equipment related to their disability at school. This may include items such as wheelchairs, ramps, hoists, commodes and specialist seating.

The Student Equipment Needs in School Fact Sheet has been developed to ensure that each student has access to the equipment their therapists recommend and outlines the source of the equipment prescribed to the child. This is relevant to students who are receiving NDIS support and to students who are not NDIS clients.

Personal Care Support

The Department of Education is an NDIS service provider as part of the Tasmanian Government’s funding component of the NDIS.

Personal care in schools is our contribution, which relates to the provision of supports to students who need assistance with feeding, toileting, administration of medication etc. during the school day.

Transport

The NDIS is currently undertaking a consultation process regarding the provision of supported school transport for students with disability to travel to and from school if their parents or carers are unable to transport them. Further information in relation to supported school transport will be provided once this review is completed.

NDIS Grievance and Review Process

Families and potential participants (active or potential) have the right to request a review of decisions made by the NDIA regarding access to the NDIS, review of plans and the supports approved. The NDIS is committed to listening to and working with families and the local service providers (Mission Australia and Baptcare) are the first contact point for all complaints. Further information is available at NDIS Internal Review Process.
